About the Gala
The Never Give Up Gala is named after a pivotal time in Wood’s Homes’ 111-year history. Back in the 1980s, while on a camping trip with clients, a group of staff sat around the campfire discussing the challenges of their work. Out of this conversation came the decision that strengthened their resolve. “We made it very clear that we would never give up on a young person,” says Dr. Philip Perry, past clinician with Wood’s Homes. He adds that this mindset helped the staff stay consistent when things got tough.
To this day, “we never give up” is embedded in Wood’s Homes values. We know that we handle situations that others won’t. We know that by never giving up we’re making a difference.
Wood’s Homes is a mental health organization, serving children, young people and their families so they can thrive in their community. We offer over 40 programs across Alberta, ranging from campus-based, live-in services to in-home support for families whose children are facing mental health challenges. We also work hard to make sure counselling is accessible in our community. Through our Calgary Public Library Wellness Desks and the Eastside Community Mental Health Centre—we offer free crisis counselling. Eastside will even accommodate those seeking help through a chat or text, and provide counselling services in multiple languages.
